The Eye of Perishment is the name that humans use for the god-level item created by the primeval god Kali. The suras know it as the Pledge Token. There are a total of 7 Eyes of Perishment[1].

Characteristics[]

In its native form, an Eye of Perishment takes the form of a small red sphere of ideal size to fit into the palm of one's hand. Its appearance is somewhat reminiscent of the eyes of Taraka clan suras.

When used, an Eye can change shape into a red accessory that attaches itself to the user. It is known to be able to take the form of necklaces, bracelets, belts, and hair ornaments.[2]

The Eye makes it possible to cut down the time which a sura would require to naturally develop. It is commonly used for the development of rakshasas to 5th stage because natural development can take tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of years. The strength that a rakshasa can gain by using the item is almost as great as from developing normally.[3]

Using the item, however, places a penalty on the sura. Allegedly, the price for the development itself is not much of a big deal, but the price for cutting down the time needed to develop is heavy. The penalty depends on the conditions of the pledge.[4] The side effects of using the Eye need to be clearly explained to the sura and consent is required, otherwise the human will be the one to receive the mental defects caused by the eye. These defects vary in severity depending on how much time was cut down on the development[1]

In order to use the Eye, one must put their palm on the Eye, call Kali, and say the first thing they want to do after they obtain greater power, however, it must be something possible and something they sincerely wish. Then the item will begin to glow and the Idha Etu Kali spell must be cast.[5]

The wish is more than a procedure to measure the sura's sincerity. It becomes the purpose of the sura who develops, meaning that they will dedicate their entire life towards that purpose. This results in twisted personalities, and usually results in painful lives. According to Hanuman, the wish and it's probability are decided by Kali herself. These wishes are arbitrary and are based on Kali's expectations, and often may have nothing to do with the sura making the wish or simply be natural coincidences.[6]

If the Eye is used on a being which has no stages of development, it will attach itself, but otherwise not affect the creature. The creature would still need to be of sura descent.[7]

It is possible to unequip the eye if the deal is invalid or impossible, this is done using the spell Idha Etu Visnu. Before Visnu's disappearance it was possible to unequip the item even when the deal works, however, this is no longer the case. Meaning if the deal is successful, there is no way to undo it.[1]

Notes[]

  • An alternate translation for Eye of Perishment is Eye of Mortality.
  • An alternate translation for Pledge Token is Proof of Trade.
  • Among Kali's items, the Eye of Perishment is the one that breaks the laws of the universe the most, and the price for using it is terrible. The purpose of all of Kali's items is allegedly to destroy the person who uses them.[2][3]
  • Idha Etu is a summoning spell and the need for it to be cast signifies that the assistance of a human is required.[5]
  • Leez the Cat began to act strange when the Eye was used on her.[8] A fan theory suggests that she may have been possessed by Kali.

Plot[]

About 300 years ago (D700) Samphati used the Eye of Perishment to develop to 5th stage after living for a mere 5000 years. As a result of the penalty she took, she became mentally damaged. The Eye took the shape of a red earring attached to her left ear. It is likely that her wish involved revenge against the one who killed her younger sister.[9][2]

In D23, Akasha hands over another Eye of Perishment to Maruna and asks him to find a person who knows how to use it in the human realm.[10] Maruna gets tricked by Kaz Lehn, who uses the item on Leez the Cat while demonstrating its use. It attaches itself to her collar but since she has no stages of development, it does not otherwise affect her appearance.[3][7]

Ran Sairofe is instructed on how to reuse the item which the cat wears and to use it on Maruna if he feels like he can trust the sura and there is no other way. The two of them end up getting sent to a place beyond time, where they allegedly spend a long time and travel back in time. Upon their return, it is revealed that Ran used the Eye, but not on Maruna.[11][12][13]

During his time travels, Ran ends up using the eye on himself by accident. His purpose was to measure the sincerity of both Kalavinka and Raltara regarding their wish for Maruna's wellbeing. However, for some reason the eye attached itself to Ran's heart causing him great pain. Later on, Hanuman explains that she knows of four rakshasas who used the eyes to develop. Two of them wished for Utpala's death, trusting in their new powers they rushed to attack him and ended up dead. Another wished to torment Murugan, which was successfully accomplished, however this sura eventually got killed by gods in a pincer attack.[14]
